About Us

Family cats

For us, everything began with the King of Cats — Elfis.
When we first visited a breeder, our intention was simple: to bring home a little girl kitten. But fate had other plans. All the girls hid, while one confident, bright-eyed boy walked straight up to us, as if he had already chosen his family. That was Elfis — and from that moment, he became much more than a pet. He is a true member of our family, joining us at work, keeping us company in daily life, and even helping to train and walk our German Shepherd, Juta.

In 2018, our journey led us to Norway, where we welcomed two extraordinary queens into our home — Luna and Safira. Each has her own beautiful character, both wonderfully gentle with children and deeply connected to people. Their temperament reflects everything we love about the Norwegian Forest Cat: calm confidence, affectionate sweetness, playful curiosity, and the agile, natural grace of the breed.

From these three remarkable cats, our passion grew.
We are committed to preserving this magnificent, ancient breed and sharing the joy of living with such marvellous, strong, and soulful companions. What began with Elfis choosing us has become a small, family-run, sustainable cattery rooted in love, respect, and the peaceful rhythms of the Latvian countryside.

ABOUT THE NORWEGIAN FOREST CAT

The Norwegian Forest Cat is one of the few truly natural breeds in the world, with roots that reach deep into Norway’s ancient landscapes. While the exact beginnings of these majestic cats will forever remain partly a mystery, their presence is woven into Scandinavian folklore and history.

Legend tells us that the Norwegian Forest Cats were once companions of the Vikings — hardy, capable hunters who travelled alongside their human families. By the sixteenth century, cats matching their description were already noted in writings: large, strong-bodied cats with long legs, thick ruffs, tufted ears, and lush, water-resistant coats. Much like their modern descendants, they were known for their unusual love of water and their skill at catching fish from lakes and streams.

In old folk tales, they were sometimes called “Fairy Cats”. It is easy to see why. With their elegant, athletic frames and long, flowing tails, they must have seemed almost magical as they moved silently through the forests — a glimmer of silver, cream, or tabby weaving between the trees.

Today’s Norwegian Forest Cats still carry that same beauty, strength, and natural charm. They are a breed shaped by nature, known for their gentle temperament, quiet confidence, and deep bond with people.

PERSONALITY

The Norwegian Forest Cat—affectionately known as the Wegie—is a gentle, friendly, and wonderfully balanced companion. Deeply fond of their family, they enjoy being near their people without demanding constant attention. A Wegie is perfectly content relaxing in the same room, observing daily life, or entertaining himself when no one is home.

While affectionate, he tends to be modest in his displays of love. Wegies are rarely lap cats, but they delight in a gentle tickle behind the ears or under the chin, and they often return the gesture with a soft headbutt or a warm cheek rub. With visitors, they may be politely reserved at first—classic Scandinavian grace—but their quiet loyalty to their family runs deep.

These cats communicate with subtle Scandinavian restraint. Their voices are soft and rarely used, reserved mostly for moments when they truly need something… usually a meal.

Athletic by nature, the Norwegian Forest Cat is a born climber. You’ll often find him perched at the highest point in the home, surveying his domain with calm confidence. True to his heritage as a wilderness and farm cat, he has no hesitation in tackling heights—or even descending them headfirst. And thanks to his water-resistant coat and natural instincts, he has a surprising fondness for fishing and exploring by water.

Despite their historic love for the outdoors, they adapt beautifully to indoor living, settling easily into a peaceful home environment. Intelligent, resourceful, and mild-mannered, they form close bonds with their families and enjoy interactive play with anyone willing to join their game.

With their marvellous temperaments, friendly nature, and joyful presence, Norwegian Forest Cats live harmoniously with people, children, other cats, and even dogs. They are not just beautiful to look at—they are endlessly fun, deeply affectionate, and truly wonderful companions.

HISTORY

The Norwegian Forest Cat’s powerful build, dense double coat, and remarkable resilience are living proof of a breed shaped by centuries of survival in the harsh Scandinavian climate. These cats were highly valued in ancient times, travelling alongside the Vikings and helping to keep their ships and settlements free of vermin. Their strength, agility, and natural hunting talent made them indispensable companions.

By the early 20th century, however, the Norwegian Forest Cat had become increasingly rare in its homeland. As urbanisation progressed and natural populations dwindled, the breed faced the real risk of extinction. Early efforts to preserve the national cat began in the 1930s, but the outbreak of World War II interrupted the programme and further threatened the breed’s survival.

It wasn’t until the 1970s that dedicated Norwegian breeders successfully re-established a structured breeding programme. Their efforts were recognised on a national level when the late King Olaf officially declared the Norwegian Forest Cat the national cat of Norway—an honour that reflected both cultural pride and the breed’s deep historical roots.

Today, thanks to these preservation efforts, the Norwegian Forest Cat thrives once more, beloved for its natural beauty, strength, and gentle temperament.
